This Just In: Season's Greetings from the Local News!
Newsday illustrator Gary Viskupic gives the Scrooge treatment to WABC news curmudgeon Roger Grimsby
So, you may have noticed that October came and went without a blog post from your busy Non-Parader, just as June and August had. Well, I'm not going to let this holiday season go uncelebrated, so I'm digging up a long-labored-over project and giving the world an early present--my compilation of season's greetings from local New York City-area news personalities, as published in the Newsday TV Books of the 70's and 80's!
Regular readers of this blog--the oft-mentioned four mental patients and Kafka's ghost--know that I collect the television listings supplement that came with Sunday Newsday back in my day. Long Island's "hometown" newspaper began publishing it in April 1972, which is where my collection begins, and changed format in 1986. The last issue I have is the one covering the week of Christmas, 1985. That's about three weeks after my father died unexpectedly, when I was 16 years old, so it's an appropriate end to my halcyon (if fairly neurotic) childhood, and thus it is my nostalgia collection's unofficial terminus.
For most of those years, the NTVB printed holiday well-wishes from famous folks of the day, mainly performers on whatever TV shows then populated the networks, usually under the headline, "From All of Us to All of You." However, they also included a number of local broadcasters offering yuletide salutations (mainly newscasters, but others too), which is what I present today. Thanks to Newspapers.com, I was able to fill in the gaps of my hard-copy collection and assemble every quote they ever published, which I will be reproducing later. For now, I'm just giving you the local slant.
There are names in this list I remember fondly, others I'd forgotten. There are many I never knew at all, or learned later when I began collecting locally-recorded VHS of the eighties. Whenever possible, I'll link names to videos with those people on my YouTube channel ("Hugo Faces"), with each link being unique.
Parenthetical comments are original from Newsday, bracketed comments are mine. Photos without italicized captions written by me are from the original TV Books. Randomly capitalized words and words in all caps are sic erat scriptum. I tried to put the entries in channel order, but keep in mind I am not an actual journalist or editor, so I may have screwed up an entry or two. Feel free to correct me.
Without further ado, let me be the first to wish you: Merry Christmas!
"From All of Us to All of You"
1972
"For really the first time in my life, I approach the holiday season with a complete absence of good cheer. I've just seen too much unhappiness over the last 12 months. When we begin to care for the retarded the way we should, when migrant workers are paid a living wage, and when the heroin epidemic has claimed its last victim, on that day I'll say, 'It's truly a merry Christmas.'"
Geraldo Rivera (Eyewitness News)
[Way to kick off the piece with a cheery message, Gerry.]
"All of us in the 'Romper Room' school, including Mr. Do Bee, wish you and your families a Christmas full of happiness and love and thanks and sharing."
Your friend, Miss Louise (Romper Room)
[I think of Miss Louise as my Romper Room host.]

"Greetings from America's greatest broadcaster—although I would love to have you all over for eggnog at my East Side apartment, that's not very practical. "Christmas is a time to remember, for, in our memories, joy and happiness live forever."

"As a broadcaster, Christmas to me is usually the day I work. Knowing that others are at home with their families has always made me closer to those that are also on duty or lonely and, through the airwaves, we've been able to share these feelings. Since most of my Christmases have been spent in Puerto Rico, I am used to long and happy holidays. We celebrate in both a religious and a civic way, a bit harder than most folk. Now I think of Christmas as a ritual that we both need and deserve. In difficult times, it is these rituals that give us strength and bind us together. We owe it to ourselves to overdo, to go overboard. How dreary would our lives be without a Christmas."
Sally Jessy Raphael (WPIX News)
[I don't recall her being on channel 11, but I definitely recall her prattling on.]

Grover (Sesame Street)
“Personally, this holiday thing is not fun to me. So, have a yukky holiday and a yukky New Year."
Oscar, the Grouch (Sesame Street)
1977
"Especially to children everywhere in the world... may you have Warmth, Peace and Love this holiday season and in the coming year."

Rolland Smith (Channel 2 News anchorman)
[Sick burn on cranky Newsday TV reviewer!]
"I never try to preach or tell anyone how to run their lives--but it does seem to me, if you believe in God, and go to his house, he will eventually come to your house. The more religion and more belief in God, then the more peace on earth and less problems."
Warner Wolf (Channel 2 Sports)
"I've never felt any of us had a right to have high expectations for the new year. Just to make it through the previous year is sufficient reward. "When I was a kid back in Nebraska and the Depression and during the War, we were so poor we couldn't afford to make a big fuss over Christmas. We never exchanged fancy gifts (although I do remember getting very practical things, like overshoes and made-over winter coats). Somehow, though, Dad always managed to find a tree (years later I discovered he would bring home the discarded tops of taller trees bought by other people). What we did exchange, however, was the most important thing: precious bits and pieces of ourselves. Of our love, our affection, our loyalty. And all these years later, those are the Christmases I remember most and best. And that is what I wish everybody, everywhere could have: a family blessed with the greatest gift of all--Love."

Carol Martin (Channel 2 News)
"I, and my mother, Elizabeth, and my father, Richard, and my brothers, Jeffrey and Brian, and my uncles, Eddie, Henry, Chick and Jack, and aunts, Virginia and Lee, and step-grandfather, Charles--all of whom live on Long Island--wish all of you who are not related and live on Long Island (and, indeed, the world), a very happy holiday season."
Richard Bey (Two on the Town, WCBS)
"When asked to write something for publication about Christmas, one is tempted to expound upon the contrast between the world's woes and the Christmas spirit. Certainly the spirit of the season brings out the best in us, and certainly our behavior during the holidays demonstrates that we can be kinder to each other, a worthy goal. But Christmas, for me, has always been focused upon a smaller world--my family and close friends. It is a time to strengthen bonds of love and to savor the intoxicating joy of young children for whom Christmas holds a special magic. And it is a time to make a wish on their behalf; that their world will be filled with peace and joy."
Chuck Scarborough (News 4 New York)

"I come from a small town in Nebraska, and the kids in my neighborhood used to go Christmas caroling every year. We always loved it when we got to the Wolf's house because they would always applaud the loudest at our wavering carols. Then they would invite us in for hot chocolate and cookies, and Uncle Max would always give each of us a quarter when we left. It was years before we grew up enough to discover the truth about Uncle Max and Aunt Hattie: they were Jewish. And they loved us. And isn't that what Christmas is all about?"
Katie Kelly (Live at Five)

Deep down, I think that's really what Christmas and Chanukah are all about.”

Remember, holidays are like headaches. Everybody goes through them. This year, let's just try to enjoy them and take some of the excitement with us for the other 11 months of the year. "Currier & Ives dead? You might as well try to convince Virginia there is no Santa Claus. They live on, all three of them, right here on Long Island, in the Village of East Hampton... the small, decorated trees along Main Street, the big community tree in front of the post office, the lighted wings of the windmill, the wreaths on windows and front doors, the warmth of lighted windows glimpsed down winding lanes on cold December nights, and, if we're lucky, that first gentle dusting of winter's snow. "We never exchanged gifts on Christmas Day when I was a boy in Puerto Rico. Christmas Eve was kept solemnly until midnight and became joyous after the mass. No, our gifts came 12 days later on Three Kings Day, the Epiphany. After all, that was when the Magi came bearing gifts for the Christ Child. Traditionally, each child received three gifts, that's all Jesus received... but the gifts never were as important to us as those 12 days of joy and loving neighborliness. My family still keeps the 12 days and the three gifts... and we cherish the 12 days of Christmas more."

"This is the time when we take a special moment to remember that special dream: Peace on Earth, good will toward men. Through history, it has always been a dream that never comes true. But it has never lost its importance and vitality. I hope men and women will always have the courage to keep the dream alive, because when we lose the hope and faith that it can one day come true, we will then be lesser people... Merry Christmas from me to you."
Bill Beutel (Eyewitness News)

"It doesn't take matches. It doesn't take wood. It doesn't take kindling as we think it should. To make the warmest fire, and keep it burning bright. It only takes the knowledge of our own indwelling light. So use your light. Just let it shine, and understand the reason why He was born. Why we are here to celebrate this season. God bless you."
Vince Lipari & Family (Eyewitness News)
