More Season's Greetings from Newsday's Christmas TV Books!
Hey, it's Christmas!!! And as promised, here are the remaining celebrity Season's Greetings from the pages of the back-in-the-day Newsday TV Book! I've already done a post for the issues that I own, and then another for local New York City-area personalities.
This post covers the yuletide issues that I do not own: 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, and 1982. I had a trial subscription to Newspapers.com, so I copied all the pages and then extracted the text, and then pain-stakingly edited it. You're welcome. Unfortunately, that means the covers are in black-and-white, but I suspect you'll get over it. You're resilient like that.
First, here's the Disney cover for 1975, which did not feature celeb greetings.%20cover.jpg)
1976
"May 1977 be as happy for everyone as 1976 has been for me: a year that has brought me new friends, personal fulfillment as an actor, and a great deal of laughter. Merry Christmas to everyone."
Tim Matheson (The Quest)
"Christmas is a time to remember, for, in our memories, joy and happiness live forever."
Joe Franklin [longtime WOR host]
"Merry Christmas and peaceful years to come."
Carol Burnett
“My prescription for a Happy New Year is good health and good humor.”
Danny Thomas (The Practice) [I love the greetings that include plugs! This one is pretty oblique, though--he was playing a doctor on The Practice.]
"A very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year. Much love."
Sonny & Cher
"It would be my prayer that at this time of the year, we would all remember that peace must first reign in our hearts before it will be apparent in the world."
Cloris Leachman (Phyllis)
"The Christmas when I had just turned 18 years old was my most memorable so far because it was such a bittersweet occasion. I'm the youngest of three children of a close-knit family in Phoenix, Ariz., and this was my first yuletide away from home. It was during my three years touring as a vocalist and we were in Reno, Nev., for the holiday. It was my first 'White Christmas' ever and it was so beautiful, but I was so lonely for my family."
Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman)
"If all my Christmas wishes come true, I'll find a man who Mel won't poison, Vera won't scare off, and Flo won't molest."
Linda Lavin (Alice) [Even better than show plugs: in-character greetings! What sincerity!]
"TV audiences have never started a New Year with a Don Rickles TV series and I think it's about time they did."
Bob Newhart [A shout-out to his pal.]
"Merry Christmas to all of my friends on Long Island."
Mary Tyler Moore
"Peace and love for those who find peace in benevolent madness."
John Savage (Gibbsville) [LI boy, but I'm still not sure if he's from Plainview or Hicksville]
"May your Christmas be 'dyno-mite' and your tomorrows be always bright."
Jimmie Walker (Good Times)
"Christmas is a time to contemplate the significance of the birth of Christ and to share these thoughts with friends and family."
Mike Douglas
"For 1977, I wish a cookie a day for everybody on Long Island and all of the rest of the cookies in the country for me."
Cookie Monster (Sesame Street) [Greedy bastard.]
"All the movie stars are buying Christmas decorations. Just the other day I saw Lassie picking out a tree."
Bob Hope [Hope usually offered very heartfelt greeting, this year he went for the rimshot.]
"Having a wonderful time, wish you were here. Season's Greetings."
Edward Asner (Mary Tyler Moore Show)
"My Christmas wish comes in two parts. First, I sincerely wish that there be less hate among people in the world. Second, I wish that the warm yuletide feelings people have for one another during the holiday season go beyond Christmastime. Wouldn't that be nice? Season's Greetings."
Angie Dickinson (Police Woman)
"A happy Christmas for everyone, and one that is free of strife.”
Gig Young (Gibbsville) [Less than two years later, he'd kill his wife of three weeks and himself.]
"This is the time of the year to do more than just remember your loved ones. Peace on Earth and good will to all."
Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family)
"I hope that all of Newsday's readers will be able to spend Christmas with their families, as I will. The happiest part of Christmas is listening to the laughter of people you love. Best wishes for the New Year."
Kurt Russell (Quest)
"Have a happy..."
James Arness
"Ever since I can remember I have been an elephant freak. So I guess my most memorable Christmas was when I was 4-years-old and Santa brought me an elephant named Rumbo. The year before I had received an elephant named Dumbo. And the year before that, an elephant named Jumbo. But I liked Rumbo best."
Daryl Dragon (The Captain and Tennille) [Speaking of rum, I think he had had a couple...]
"There can never be a 'switch" on Season's Greetings, so Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
Robert Wagner and Eddie Albert (Switch) [Plug!]
"May the spirit of Christmastide not be limited to December 25. Love to all."
Beatrice Arthur (Maude)
“Keep your fires up.”
Will Geer (The Waltons) [Not sure if that's a Grandpa Walton thing or a gay thing.]
"A Merry Christmas and Chanukah to all and may all your credit cards be white."
Alan King
"At a time when there is so much deprivation in the world, we should all remember that we have each other in common."
Valerie Harper (Rhoda)
"Happy holidays to all and practice laughing in the New Year."
Dena Dietrich (The Practice) [An oblique plug from Mother Nature herself!]
"I have a number of Christmas wishes, some of them fervent. One is that Amy Carter will not be allowed to run a stand on the sidewalk outside the White House, pushing three-cent-peanut-butter-sandwiches: if her father can't jawbone her out of that, he could at least fob her off with the post of Secretary of Commerce. I also hope, though less fervently, that Harry Reasoner will learn the difference between a ‘bidet' and a ‘bain-marie.' He has recently written me a letter in which he has the two mixed up, and I would hate to think what that could do to his personal life. He could of course ask Barbara Walters to explain the difference, but I understand they are not speaking."
Hughes Rudd (CBS News) [Also, perhaps, "in his cups," as guys like Hughes Rudd like to say.]
"With all the brewery hurly-burly, and keeping our hair neat and curly, we wanted to tell you bright and early, Merry Christmas from Laverne and Shirley."
Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams [In character!]
"The greeting is the same whether you are in New York City or Taos, New Mexico, Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
Dennis Weaver (McCloud)
"Christmas still remains the most loving time of the year for me.”
Kate Jackson (Charlie's Angels)
"Memories of childhood, wonderful music, being with the family, and a special glow which would be nice if it lasted for the whole year."
Neil Sedaka
"My most memorable Christmas was last year when my new wife Cheryl joined the Howard clan (mother Jean, father-actor-writer Rance and brother Clint). But this one coming up should be the greatest ever. Not only will the family be together, but I will be about to embark on my dream—preparing a motion picture which I will direct when 'Happy Days' goes on hiatus in January."
Ron Howard (Happy Days) [His always referenced his family and whatever he was working on.]
"We have been going through a very strong self-analyzing period—perhaps it's time now to put ourselves aside and start thinking about others."
Polly Bergen (Not for Woman Only)
"Attention all personnel of the 4077th M*A*S*H unit. You will all enjoy the holiday season. That's an order! Dismissed!"
Harry Morgan (M*A*S*H) [In character!]
"On Christmas—I hope it's white and merry for everyone."
Robert Conrad (Baa Baa Black Sheep)
"The thing I like best about Christmas is the fact that my family gets together again. The kids (we have four) have grown now, and there's only one left at home. One son lives in Oregon, another is in Hollywood trying for a show business career, and my oldest daughter is in school in Arizona. But at Christmastime we all get together, and that's why it is my favorite holiday.”
Dick Van Dyke
"Best wishes Today and everyday."
Jane Pauley (Today) [Plug!]
"Holiday greetings...and may all of you get a new wardrobe."
**SS Jamie Farr (M*A*S*H) [In character?]
"Wishing you joy in the holiday season and love the whole year through."
Madlyn Rhue (Executive Suite)
"What does Christmas mean to me? First, it's a celebration of the birth of Christ. Then, it's a day for which a lot of people spend a lot of money and a day that a few people make a lot of money."
Demond Wilson (Sanford and Son) [I've heard he was fun. Eye roll emoji.]

Andy Williams
"I wish everyone the best of health so that they may fully enjoy the winter weather and the holiday season."
Storm Field (WABC-TV News Science Editor)
"May you give as much love as you receive."
Louise Lasser (Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman)
"I've always had pleasant memories during the holiday season. However, what I'm sure will be my most memorable Christmas is coming this December 25. I am looking forward to spending the holiday with my lovely, wonderful wife, Carroll. It will be our first Christmas together and one that we will always look back on as the most memorable Christmas."
Gary Frank (Family) [Still married, I believe.]
The Christmas season... a time truly to count your blessings: to be thankful for the mistakes you haven't made, the tragedies you haven't suffered; and perhaps a little cheer to a few among the many whose path may cross with yours."
Lucille Rich (WCBS-TV News)
"I wish everybody the time to do all the nice things they never had time for before."
Merv Griffin
"A joyous Christmas to our Long Island friends, from the staff of WOR-TV.”
Tom Dunn
“Here's hoping all you 'darlings' have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
Robert Blake (Baretta) [I can't tell if that's meant warmly or as a threat.]
"Greetings from America's greatest broadcaster—although I would love to have you all over for eggnog at my East Side apartment, that's not very practical. So, I am going to spread holiday cheer every morning at 9 AM on Ch. 7. Those of you who do not take me up on this offer will find yourselves watching 'Mr. Ed’ reruns for the rest of your lives. Love and kisses."
Stanley Siegel (A.M. New York) [A plug and a dis?]
"Christmas is still THE holiday of the year. While it has become too commercial, the essence is still there, the sharing of thoughts, worldly treasures and time, with friends. This year I plan to take time off from work to celebrate it property.'
Ed McMahon (Johnny Carson Show)
"Who loves you baby? Santa and Telly."
Telly Savalas (Kojak) [In character... as himself?]
"At this special time of year, I wish everyone the thrill of wonderful, healthy children and grand-children."
Frank Sinatra
"Christmas of 1945 sticks in my mind through the years. At that time I was thinking how lucky was to be in a military hospital in Pearl Harbor recuperating from my (war) injuries and I knew I would be taking a one way trip home soon.”
John Beradino (General Hospital)
"Christmas in New York really gets as cold as it did back home in Wisconsin, but that feeling of camaraderie and good cheer is every bit as warm. Best wishes to all for a Merry Christmas."
Jim Jensen (WCBS-TV News)
"ABCDEFGHIJK... MNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. Get it? Love!"
Sally Struthers (All in the Family) [Ellipsis mine, as Newsday did not emphasize the joke.]
"Kids are people too, and isn't it nice that people recognize it during the holiday season."
Bob McAllister (Wonderama)
"Lord Buckley said it: 'The holiday season is when even the folks who don't have anything, have something, and even the people who know no one, know everyone. So to all… a happy holiday!"

"Helloo, everybody! Did you know it is time for the holidays? Well, it is and I want you to have a very happy time."

Rolland Smith (WCBS-TV News)
“Personally, this holiday thing is not fun to me. So, have a yukky holiday and a yukky New Year."
Oscar, the Grouch (Sesame Street) [Oh Oscar, you prickly fuck.]
"I would hope in the New Year that each of us will find new reasons to smile more, not necessarily at jokes, but because we feel better about ourselves and the positive things that surround us everyday."
David Hartman (Good Morning, America)
"As a broadcaster, Christmas to me is usually the day I work. Knowing that others are at home with their families has always made me closer to those that are also on duty or lonely and, through the airwaves, we've been able to share these feelings. Since most of my Christmases have been spent in Puerto Rico, I am used to long and happy holidays. We celebrate in both a religious and a civic way, a bit harder than most folk. Now I think of Christmas as a ritual that we both need and deserve. In difficult times, it is these rituals that give us strength and bind us together. We owe it to ourselves to overdo, to go overboard. How dreary would our lives be without a Christmas."
Sally Jessy Raphael (WPIX News) [Holy moly, turn it off, Sally Jessy...]
"Rubber Duckie, Bert and I wish you a happy holiday as you go slipping and sliding on your sleigh. Oh boy, three ‘S’ words.”
Ernie (Sesame Street)
"May your year be as bright as Jimmy Carter's teeth and your life as long as a Bill Beutel sentence."

"May you start the New Year on a high note."
Henry Mancini
"Gee, I've always had a lot of fun on Christmas but last year was especially fun. I got to go to Hawaii. It was really different and unusual."
Kristy McNichol (Family)
"With a born-again President in the New Year coming, 1977 will, I hope, prove a happy one for us all."
Marciarose (WNBC-TV News)
"Happy holidays and may you all make only good impressions on each other in the New Year!"

Frank Field (WNBC-TV Weatherman)
1978
“Let's make the most of the time we have together this joyous holiday season."
Henry Winkler (Happy Days)
“This is a very special Christmas for me because we are now a family of three. I hope your holidays are just as special for you."
Bruce Jenner [Meaning son Burt.]
"Let me propose a toast: to a peaceful and joyous holiday season, to everyone everywhere.”

Parker Stevenson (Hardy Boys) [Still a plug, Parky, but nice try.]
“This Christmas begins the International Year of the Child 1979–but how many children will have the Christmas we want for them? This Christmas I wish everyone would make a small commitment to reach out to the children and each of us in our own way do something in the coming year to fill their lives with greater hope. May this Christmas be a joyous and a caring holiday.”
Marlo Thomas
“Wishing you the real warmth of the holiday season."
Lloyd Bridges
"May all your tomorrows be filled with love and may all your dreams come true."
Jean Stapleton (All in the Family)
"Merry Christmas.”
Stanley Siegel [Not much to say this year--maybe he just got word he was being canceled again.]
"I would like to wish to all Newsday readers the peace and joy that traditionally goes with holiday greetings, and, at the same time, may I wish to all of you that personal peace that comes from within, but is often so elusive."

“Be happy, be grateful and always give thanks to Above.”
Wolfman Jack (Midnight Special)
"May the holidays bring you all health and happiness and the good sense to enjoy life to the fullest. I'm a firm believer in the old expression, 'Live every day as though it's your last.'"
Dick Clark (Dick Clark's Live Wednesday)

"May you and those you love enjoy health and happiness throughout the coming New Year."
Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family)
"Some folks seem to think that the warm family life as seen on 'Little House on the Prairie' is just too good to be true. I don't agree. In sending joyous holiday wishes to you all, I remind you that love and concern among family and friends will result in happy holidays and a great New Year—all year long. The real message of this season is "love' and 'trust'--and they both perform miracles."
Michael Landon [Plug!]
"It has been said that friends are the presents we give ourselves. If this is true, and I happen to think it is, then I've been very indulgent. As another eventful year comes to a close, I look back on 75 Christmases past, some filled with joy, others with sorrow, but all of them celebrated with an abundance of wonderful friends. Now, with the promise of a more joyous and peaceful world in 1979, I toast all my friends in the Long Island area, wishing a very happy holiday to all, and, to all good cheer, good friends and better golf scores.”
Bob Hope
"Have a very merry out-of-this-world holiday season."
Lorne Greene (Battlestar Galactica) [Dumb plug, for a dumb show]

"As the age-old traditions envelop you, may you experience happy memories of past Christmases and realize family health and happiness."
Pat Harper (WPIX-TV News)
1979
"Each Christmas is important but this year it has special significance. It is the last Christmas of a decade, a decade like most decades—a counter-balance between great highs in advancement and excitement and tragedy and despair. But the '70s once again brought us peace. And that Is the wish that Dolores and I want to express most… the wish that this peace will be lasting. So from us, 'Peace on Earth, good will toward men.' And speaking of changes in the last 10 years, Dolores just corrected me. Make that, Peace on Earth, good will toward men and women." And to all, a merry Christmas.”
Bob Hope [Oh, those women, always wanting to be included...]
"As I write this, looking forward to Christmas shopping with a surge of humanity in packed stores, the slow crawl around the block looking for parking places, sore legs from tramping around looking for the perfect gift and all the other headaches of pre-Christmas, I'm not filled with an abundant amount of joy. But I know, sure as I know that "CHiPs" is my favorite show, when I see my daughter's face when she discovers the tree on Christmas morn, that all those aches, pains and frustrations will all seem trivial. Christmas is a time of sharing and there are no better people to share it with than children, for their infectious joy and excitement know no bounds. I wish you and your children and loved ones the very merriest and joyous of holiday seasons."
Robert Pine (CHiPs)
"Happiness is spending the holidays with family and friends. Season's greetings to you and yours."

"I really love Christmas. We used to have a Santa Claus in my stage show every year, but we had to take him out because people got upset when we would beat him up and steal his bagful of toys at the end of the show. But seriously, I miss Christmas in New York. It's one of the best times to be there. It just isn't the same out in Hollywood, with the sunshine glinting off the Christmas decorations and Santa Claus sweating on Hollywood Boulevard.”
Alice Cooper
"During this time of giving and resolve, let's be grateful for what we have and proud of what we have shared. Our tradition of strength and caring has set us apart and made us unique. Let's remember that this year, rather than apologize for it."

Gil de Lamadrid (Midday)
"As we move into this Christmas season I can't help but recall when I was 5-years-old. We lived near a hospital and on Christmas Eve I remember my Mom taking me over to one of the wards to sing for the patients there. I remember that I sang one song, ‘You Are My Sunshine.’ It was the first time that I had performed in public and when I finished my 'performance,’ the nurses and some of the patients gave me $4.00 in quarters. That was my first performance I was ever paid for. It was sure fun to get paid for singing and, come to think of it, it still is.”

"At Christmas, we often spend so much money buying presents for our family and friends. But how much do we give to the blind beggar? Or to the bag lady who could enjoy a good lunch and a cup of coffee? Or to the man sitting in a wheel chair—with no legs—who's only asking for a little change... a friendly smile... a quick hello? Deep down, I think that's really what Christmas and Chanukah are all about.”

"Now, in this season of 'Peace on Earth," let's stop demanding that the rest of the world be first to make peaceful gestures. Let's talk peace ourselves, at least as much as we talk war. Maybe Secretary of Peace should be a Cabinet post. Shouldn't as many plans for peace be laid on the President's desk as plans for war? We haven't heard a peaceful word out of Washington in years."
